Episode 4
What is a Creator?
Aloha, welcome to the "Creator 50" podcast. I am Doc Rock, your content creation, coach, and host for the Creator 50 podcasts. Today, we're going to be talking about what is a creator?
Some say, creator, that's what I use. Some say, content creator. I use that sometimes as well. Some say content, entrepreneur. The general public thinks all creators are YouTubers, and that's not the case. So what exactly is a content creator? When you look at yourself in the mirror, do you call yourself a creator?
What I don't want you to do is get stuck on platform names. Because if you ask the media, what a content creator is, they'll say "Youtuber." More recently, some of the media will say they're TikTokers.
I am curious, in your own words, what is a creator?

Aloha and welcome to "The Creator 50" podcast.
Speaker:This is episode four and we will be talking about "What is
Speaker:a creator I am your host Doc Rock, Content Creation Coach.
Speaker:I like to help creators, get out of their own way, tell their stories
Speaker:and share it with the world.
Speaker:First off before we get started talking about exactly what is a creator?
Speaker:I would like to clear up some mysteries around this subject because it's a
Speaker:word that gets thrown around a lot.
Speaker:I want to apologize for not being here last week.
Speaker:I was speaking at a conference, people, a video in Albany, New York,
Speaker:and the conference was absolute fire.
Speaker:I thought I was going to record in a hotel, but I was so busy just having
Speaker:amazing conversations and getting to work with some amazing creators,
Speaker:brainstorm sessions, conference talk, taking notes, doing interviews
Speaker:like it was, it was incredible.
Speaker:It was absolutely incredible.
Speaker:So, first of all, thank you, Dan Currier from creative fundamentals and Dale L
Speaker:Roberts for self publishing with Dale for inviting me to speak at this conference.
Speaker:Literally people, it was my first gig speaking at a conference since
Speaker:diving full on into being a content creator a little more than a year ago.
Speaker:I have done three virtual conferences, but this was live in-person onstage
Speaker:and it was absolutely incredible.
Speaker:I had the opportunity to speak last, which I won't say it was nerve
Speaker:wracking, but it was definitely something a little bit different.
Speaker:I mean, I'm following Roberto Blake, Diana Gladney, Shelly Nathan AKA Shelley Saves
Speaker:the day Meredith Marsh, Roger Wakefield, Eddie Garrison, of course Dan and Dale...
Speaker:amazing conference.
Speaker:Now, I have this under my belt.
Speaker:I see bigger things coming, or at least I'm setting the intention.
Speaker:Remember that setting the intention.
Speaker:So this is the perfect time to actually record this episode because I would
Speaker:like to cover what is a creator
Speaker:Some say creator, that's what I use.
Speaker:Some say content creator.
Speaker:I use that sometimes as well.
Speaker:Some say content, entrepreneur.
Speaker:The general public things, all creators are YouTubers, and that's not the case.
Speaker:So what exactly is a content creator?
Speaker:When you look at yourself in the mirror, do you call yourself a creator?
Speaker:I do.
Speaker:It's actually one of my daily affirmations.
Speaker:Get up.
Speaker:I stare at myself in the mirror and I say, I am a creator.
Speaker:So loosely defined a content creator or a creator.
Speaker:If you will, is someone responsible for the contribution of information to
Speaker:any media, especially digital meida.
Speaker:Creators, usually target a specific audience in a specific context.
Speaker:And I'm glad that we get to talk about this because one of the first
Speaker:thing we told my YouTube bretheren is if you want to grow your channel,
Speaker:you have to learn to niche down.
Speaker:Don't be a random drive by poster, like I used to be.
Speaker:Niching down fits the description.
Speaker:Creators, usually target a specific audience in a specific context.
Speaker:That's cool.
Speaker:Think about that for a minute.
Speaker:Maybe write that down as you start to plan your avatar for
Speaker:who your key people might be.
Speaker:What I don't want you to do is get stuck on platform names, because if
Speaker:you ask the media, what is a content creator, they'll just say "Youtuber".
Speaker:More recently, some of the media will say they're TikTok.
Speaker:I mean, straight from a report recently done by The Tilt, media, basically
Speaker:focused on young influencers with viral hits on TikTok and YouTube, but it's
Speaker:time to debunk that stereotype content, entrepreneurs span all age groups...
Speaker:"Creator 50"...
Speaker:industries and channel.
Speaker:For most success isn't based on a viral hit or a massive audience.
Speaker:Let's get back to that 1000 true fans idea.
Speaker:As creators and why I made this podcast for generation X is in that same report
Speaker:by the tilt, it has been discovered that generation X is actually one of the
Speaker:largest groups of creators out there.
Speaker:The breakdown is as follows gen Z only 5%, millennials
Speaker:32%, gen X 40% and boomers 23%.
Speaker:We are the largest segment, but you wouldn't know this because the media
Speaker:makes you think as little kids doing stuff that's funny on TikTok and
Speaker:YouTube, and that's not really the case.
Speaker:That's why I wanted to start this podcast and get it, spreaded so that people
Speaker:with experience people, with knowledge, people with skills can share that with
Speaker:the world by creating their content.
Speaker:Maybe it's not a podcast a podcast is a form of content.
Speaker:We're talking blogs, photographs, and video.
Speaker:Those are some of your primary forms of content.
Speaker:Again, specifically in digital media.
Speaker:Targeting specific audiences and specific context.
Speaker:One thing I would like to add to that is for us bloggers photographers, video
Speaker:creators, we often worked to optimize this content for discoverability.
Speaker:I think that's what makes you more of a creator as opposed to a person sort of the
Speaker:hobbyists, the conscience entrepreneur, the YouTube entrepreneur, the TikTok
Speaker:entrepreneur, the Instagram entrepreneur, or the blogging entrepreneur.
Speaker:We're making content designed for discoverability.
Speaker:Share-ability repeat a bit.
Speaker:So I want you to get rid of the concept of under 30 viral TikTokers or Youtubers.
Speaker:The largest and most financially stable segment of content
Speaker:creators right now is gen X.
Speaker:That's us 41 up basically 41 to 60, roughly.
Speaker:So that's us.
Speaker:That's who I'm creating this podcast for.
Speaker:And this is why I say the time is now.
Speaker:No longer should we be running around hoping that we can get viral
Speaker:or doing this stuff the kids...
Speaker:don't just copy the kids dance on TikTok.
Speaker:We had better dancers.
Speaker:Anyway, we had better music.
Speaker:So we can, rule this right now.
Speaker:We are ruling this right now and I think more of you should dive in.
Speaker:So I'm curious.
Speaker:I want to hear your definition of a creator.
Speaker:I want you to put in the comments or send me your feedback, whatever you can find
Speaker:me all over the internet at Doc R O C K.
Speaker:I'm basically everywhere under that.
Speaker:Send me on Instagram or, Facebook messenger, probably the easiest.
Speaker:I'm just really curious gang.
Speaker:What do you consider the creator or do you already consider yourself a creator?
Speaker:I mean, are you working with the purpose of making money, expanding
Speaker:your business, just honing a skill or you just want to do this as a hobby.
Speaker:Let's talk about it.
Speaker:I'm really curious.
Speaker:That'll give us some more things that we can get down the pipe.
Speaker:Now again, if you want to break down the segments, like why people are doing this,
Speaker:the number one reason given out over 78% of the population say the benefit of being
Speaker:a content creator is independence 73.
Speaker:Says it's to pursue their passion.
Speaker:Of course, there's the flexible work hours.
Speaker:Challenge yourself, earn more than your traditional job.
Speaker:These are the things that come out there.
Speaker:The one I hope you don't fall into is you want to prove something to
Speaker:other folks because that's not it.
Speaker:So let's talk about this for awhile and remember, don't
Speaker:get stuck on platform names.
Speaker:Me I'm multi-platform.
Speaker:When you talk to your family at a gathering or if you're like me as a
Speaker:full-time content creator, when people say, Hey, what are you doing now?
Speaker:I heard you sold your business.
Speaker:I'd normally do what I shouldn't do and say when you full-time
Speaker:YouTube or, and they're like, what?
Speaker:Cause it just becomes hard to explain.
Speaker:I think we need to change that.
Speaker:Now it's time for us to own it.
Speaker:Us creators over 50 it's time for us to own it.
Speaker:I'm just going to stick to my story.
Speaker:I am a creator.
Speaker:I have the shirt, says it right here on my shirt today.
Speaker:I am a creator.
Speaker:Oh, by the way, if you want a shirt like this, it's at DocRock.live/merch.
Speaker:You can get the shirt.
Speaker:I am a creator that wraps it up for another edition
Speaker:of the "Creator 50" podcast.
Speaker:Again, I am curious in your own words, what is a creator?
Speaker:You can leave it as a comment on the site, or again, hit me up on the socials.
Speaker:I'm absolutely curious what you think and we'll be back again soon with another
Speaker:edition of the "Creator 50" podcast.
Speaker:Once again, I'm Doc Rock.
Speaker:You can find me all over the internet at D O C R O C.
